Does anyone really believe Obama would have been close to getting elected if not for the color of his skin?

Was a person with so little experience and no work history really elected on his "Hope and change" platform? Or was it because america wanted its first black president and the media pushed that agenda without properly vetting him as the would do any other presidential candidate?
